Peter Raymond Selis, 49, began shooting into a crowd of dozens of people attending a pool party at the La Jolla Crossroads Apartments complex around 6 p.m. Sunday.
Four black women, two black men and a Latino man were struck by the gunfire, police said.
One of the women, 35-year-old mother Monique Clark, later died at the hospital and several of the victims were critically injured. Selis was fatally shot by police.
The suspect was reportedly upset about a breakup, called his girlfriend and began shooting at victims randomly.
Charnee James, a Michigan State University graduate was one of the shooting victims who was wounded. The 24-year-old from Ann Arbor was shot in both legs.
James moved to San Diego in early April and was set to start a new job Tuesday at Z57, a real estate marketing company. Her plans also included working part time at Macy’s.
Her mother who was on vacation in Jamaica, scrambled to make travel arrangements to join her daughter.
